Rachel Faye (Sammon) Roork
(1918 – 1993)
Ninety-nine years ago today, on 3 May 1918, in Iola, Grimes County, Texas, a baby girl was born. Her name was Rachel Faye Sammon and she was to become my grandmother.
Rachel was the 6th child and 4th daughter of John Ellis and Lillian Priscilla (Davis) Sammon. (It is interesting to note that my great-grandmother-Lillian was born on 3 May which she shared with her daughter, Rachel, but also that she died on 16 July which is my birthdate.) Rachel married my Grandpa Claud Roork in 1934, at the age of 15, and then gave birth to her first child, my mom, in 1936 at age 18. On 31 Oct in 1988, I named my first daughter, Rachel, after my grandma and fortunately they did get to meet each other! Sadly, Grandma died in 1993 at the age of 75. I think of her a lot, and miss her still.
Lillian Priscilla (Davis) and John Ellis Sammon
Grandma Rachel’s grandmother was Jane (Trant) Davis and she was born at Totnes, Devon, England in June 1847. She immigrated to Texas with her family in 1849. Grandma Jane died at the age of 59 in Grimes County on 25 Feb 1907.
